Resistance to celibacy was so virulent among the lower orders of the clergy that, after the Synod of Trier in 1432, twelve days were given to all priests and clerics to separate themselves from their concubines. This order was overturned by Sixtus IV. His Holiness granted to the male children of these concubines a special dispensation which allowed them to enter the priesthood.
